Bleeding In Early Pregnancy And Its Causes

Many pregnant women get panicked about bleeding in early pregnancy. First-time pregnant women do not know bleeding in early pregnancy is quite common. Bleeding does not necessarily mean that something is wrong but it is definitely a warning sign. Many patients get panicked about bleeding in early pregnancy, particularly the first trimester, that’s the first 12 weeks of pregnancy. What you have to understand is this symptom is quite common. Around 20 per cent of patients do present with bleeding in early pregnancy. If you have bleeding it does not necessarily mean that something is wrong, but it is definitely a warning sign of threatened abortion. It is a sign for us to look into what is happening within you or with the pregnancy. Sometimes it may be normal for some people to have something called implantation bleeding, that is when the embryo comes and sits inside the uterus some amount of bleeding may take place.

What you must do if bleeding in early pregnancy?

When you present or when you have this symptom first of all don’t be laid back. Consult a doctor immediately. Walk into the emergency at any point of time, if you have bleeding. What is important is that if you have not had a scan prior, then it is very very important for us to examine you and proceed with doing an ultrasound. This is because some of the causes for early pregnancy bleeding include ectopic pregnancy.

What Is An Ectopic Pregnancy? Ectopic pregnancy is a condition wherein the pregnancy can be implanted in your tube or elsewhere in the pelvis or anywhere else and they also present with bleeding. So if you have an ectopic pregnancy, the management completely changes.

Molar Pregnancy

Sometimes you may also have an abnormal pregnancy called molar pregnancy which again can be diagnosed only by a scan.

Sometimes it may just be a warning sign of a threatened abortion wherein there’s a little bleeding inside. In such cases which is most of the time, we will give you certain supportive tablets and medications to arrest the bleeding and we may advise you to be on rest for a certain period of time.

There are certain other conditions such as you may bleed profusely. So in such cases, we have to rule out if you’re having an incomplete abortion or a complete abortion so that you don’t end up with bleeding and other complications. In such cases, we do examine you and look at whether the cervix is open, whether it is closed, and what is the diagnosis and treat you accordingly.

To conclude bleeding is quite common but it is not something to be panicked about, it is just a warning sign. And in most cases, it could be if the bleeding is light it could be just that we need to supplement your pregnancy. If the bleeding is heavy as mentioned earlier we have to rule out if you are having a complete abortion or if there are other conditions such as ectopic pregnancy or molar pregnancy.
