The Power Of Generosity: Moral Story Of Papanna

Once upon a time, there lived a man named Papanna. He was a very selfish businessman who did not give anything to anybody. He was so stingy that his wife left him just three days after their marriage. He never kept any servants and always did all the work in his house by himself.

One fine day, Papanna realized that his neighbours were hosting a huge festival in their house, and he had not prepared any food in his own house, hoping that his neighbours would share something with him. So, he sat outside of his house, waiting and hoping that one of his neighbours would notice him and share some food. At that moment, a beggar came to him and said, “Sir, I’m very hungry. Please give me some food.” After looking at the beggar, Papanna got a despicable idea.

“Where are you from? Which village do you belong to? I’ve never seen you here before,” Papanna inquired, to which the beggar replied that he was a beggar who travels all around the villages in the kingdom, begging for food. This was his first visit to this village, and he was very hungry. Papanna, pretending to be generous, invited the beggar to sit next to him and offered him to stay at his house for as long as he wanted to stay in the village.

The beggar, touched by the gesture, thanked Papanna, who then suggested the beggar go to the neighbour’s house to get food from the festival, explaining that they were celebrating the death anniversary of an old lady and had not invited him. The beggar, grateful for the advice, went to the neighbour’s house to collect food. Papanna, seizing the opportunity, handed the beggar a huge bowl to collect more food, only to take the majority for himself when the beggar returned, leaving the beggar with only a small portion.

Days went by, and the same routine followed. Papanna continued to exploit the beggar’s efforts, becoming infamous in the village for his actions. When drought and several diseases struck the village, leaving the poor and needy in dire straits, Papanna refused to help, claiming what he had was earned through his hard work and determination.

However, the arrival of a saint in the village, known for his humility and refusal to accept gifts, intrigued Papanna. After witnessing the saint’s genuine rejection of gifts, Papanna devised a plan to gain a good reputation among the villagers. He decided to offer the saint various gifts, including jewels, clothing, food, fruits, and vegetables, fully expecting the saint to return them, allowing Papanna to appear generous without actually giving anything away.

The beggar, shocked by this sudden display of generosity, questioned Papanna’s intentions. Papanna, determined to prove himself, loaded the gifts onto a bullock cart and set off to meet the saint, all while planning to reclaim his offerings once they were inevitably refused, thus attempting to salvage his reputation under the guise of philanthropy.

Moral of the Story:

The story of Papanna, a miserly businessman whose life takes an unexpected turn, underscores the profound impact of selflessness and the power of generosity on personal transformation and community well-being. Initially characterized by his selfishness, Papanna’s journey is marked by encounters that challenge his worldview, particularly his interaction with a saint and a beggar. These interactions serve as pivotal moments, revealing the emptiness of material wealth when hoarded and the richness that comes from giving.
