Once upon a time, there was a king and the King had four wild horses untrained totally indisciplined. The King proclaimed throughout his kingdom that any horse trainer can come to train this for wild horses and if they were trained properly fit for the King to ride, the horse trainer would be given a lot of rewards and established in life.
With protect of reward many people came and they all tried to put the brittle and the saddle and tried to ride the horse on the same day and of course, the horses rebelled, they rejected the foreign hand on their body and they threw the riders off their back. Many riders had broken bones, broken bodies, broken heads, broken arms, broken legs and nobody was successful. After many months of trying and all the experts of the kingdom had come to try their fate the king gave up hope.
One day a young man comes and says to the king permit me to try once training these horses. The King looked at the young handsome person and said are you sure you want to try because many have come before you and they have all failed some have broken bones arms legs some have broken heads some have even lost their life. Are you willing to take the risk? The young man said yes, but only under one condition you give these horses to me for a period of one year and I will bring them back to you after one year fully trained. King agreed.
The young man took the horses and went away. And time past week’s became months, months became the year and even the year passed. King gave up hope. He said right off the four horses from my balance sheet they must have run away and the trainer must be dead.
By now he hears the sound of hooves and he looks out the window and there he says four beautiful horses in perfect line marching together with the young man sitting in the front horse leading the way. Of course, the King got very happy and he called the young man and said I am very happy that you brought the horses back but tell me how did you train them and why did you ask for one year one year’s time.
The young man said Sir horses were very wild no doubt and everyone tried to put the brittle and the saddle and try to control the horse right from day one. When I took your permission to take the horses away with me I let them roam free. If they used to run I used to run with them, if they used to rest I used to rest with them, if they would sleep I would put out my suit I and go to sleep, if they would drink water I would make my tea and coffee and breakfast and have my water and tea and coffee, when they would eat the grass I would make my supper and have the supper. And in this way, the horses began to think that I was a strange fifth horse with them. Then one day I put my hand on the back of a horse didn’t like it jumped away from me but slowly got used to me placing my hand on the back. Then I put the blanket one day. Didn’t like it but in course of time got used to the blanket on the back. Then I put the brittle. Didn’t like it but in course of time got used to that and gradually and gradually and gradually and slowly I cultivated friendship with the horses and because of that friendship today I am able to ride them.
Now you have four horses in you too. Are you friends with them or do you try to subdue them? Physical Being, Intellect, Worry and Ego are the four wild untrained horses and when you try to ride them what do you do, just jump on their back and start galloping? That is what you want to do? Do you want to become an instant master? Do you want to become the instant master of yourself? You don’t want to work hard to become your master?
Give me some sutra swami ji I can do it sit down there three hours four hours five hours the guru will get a backache but the disciple will continue to sit straight because you want instant, you want to become the instant master and you want to rule, you want to subdue, you want to control, you want to dominate, that is the cause of your failure. Because you don’t want to become a friend to yourself and that is the sutra of pratyahara rather than controlling the mind, trying to control the mind, because it is like the horse enticing you ride me ride me and the moment you get on the horse it begins to jump and throw you off again and when you have fallen again the mind will say come on get up ride me and again it will throw you down.
Now the lesson of pratyahara is that you become a friend to your mind and when you become the friend of your mind, the mind will respond to your instructions. And as long as you are not a friend to the mind you will be struggling and fighting. And this is one reason why people have despite going through practices and processes of Sathanas in life they have not been able to experience the spiritual nature.
Even today there are people who meditate 3-4 hours a day. There are some present here also who meditate 3-4 hours a day and who’d love to meditate as much as they can because then they don’t have to do any work outside those who meditate for more than 20 minutes, in my opinion, are the lazy people who avoid work.
It is a joke. I don’t mind it. Where was I, yeah there are people who meditate for an extended period of time but who are not able to manage their own mental behaviour or responses or reactions? They are subject to frustrations in life. They are subject to depressions in life, subject to anxiety and stress in life, subject to the influences of the negative environment in life.
I have seen people get up straight from meditation and start rebuilding the other person and slapping the other person left right and centre for having disturbed their meditation. I mean it’s crazy. At least I think it is absolutely crazy. You are trying to experience peace and because somebody disturbs your meditation you get up and give two tight slaps.
No this is one reason why people have failed to experience the spiritual quality, the spiritual awakening within themselves, despite putting in all the best effort, despite having all the best tools of sadhana with them they have not been able to create a dent or a crack in the armor of their ego and by cultivating friendship with your mind, with your intellect, with your cheetah, with your ahankara, you don’t only dent the armor of the ego, you don’t only crack the armor of the ego, you are able to remove fully the armor of the ego and be your true self and from this point onwards with self-friendship the inner processes of yoga begin the inner processes of yoga begin where you begin to work with the unknown dimensions of your own personality and nature and to awaken these experiences of the unknown within you and ultimately yoga takes you to the path of Jyothi illumination.
